What's a charter school?

A charter school is a tuition-free public school that has the ability to operate independently and be creative with its purpose, design and vision. After planning and designing the school, charter school organizers submit a charter application to a Local Education Authorizer (LEA). If approved, the LEA will enter into an agreement with a charter school board. Charter schools usually operate as non-profit corporations under the governance of a board of trustees.
