Dr. Jian Zhang
Chairperson, Founding Board of Trustees
Dr. Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at UNC Charlotte. In addition to being a dedicated educator, Dr. Zhang has over twenty years of leadership experience in various nonprofit organizations with cross-cultural missions. Dr. Zhang is currently an active board director of Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce and Charlotte International Cabinet. He serves as the board chair of Chinese American Association of Charlotte. Dr. Zhang received his B.S. in sports medicine from Chengdu College of Physical Education and MA in sports medicine from Springfield College, Springfield, MA. He received his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from USC School of Medicine, Columbia, SC and postdoctoral training in Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Dandan Liu
Vice Chairperson, Founding Board of Trustees
Dr. Liu is the Director at Panorama Holdings LLC, a real estate development company based in Charlotte. Prior to joining the private sector, Dr. Liu was a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Mass Communication at UNC Pembroke. Dr. Liu has served on the board for several non-profit organizations with education or cross-cultural missions. Dr. Liu received her B.A in English from Harbin Engineering University and M.A. in Linguistics in Jilin University, China. She received her Ph.D. in Mass Media and Communication from Temple University, Philadelphia.
Dr. John Chen
Director, Founding Board of Trustees
Dr. Chen is a well-respected leader in the international community in Charlotte. He has devoted full time in volunteer work to develop, nurture and build better interaction between various Asian community groups and the Charlotte community at large since his retirement as the Managing Director of SciMat Limited in UK in 2003. Dr. Chen has received distinguished acknowledgement for his services for numerous civic and governmental organizations, such as the Charlotte Golden Ring Award 2008, the FBI Director's 2008 National Community Leadership award, the Charlotte International Cabinet Global Leader award in 2012, the Asian Herald 20th Anniversary Community Service award in 2013, the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce Diversity award in 2015 and the 2017 Asian Herald Jian Dong Award. Dr. Chen is currently the Chairman of the Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, Chairman and head coach of the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association he founded in 2006, and board member of the Confucius Institute at UNC Charlotte. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University.
Dr. Chaowei Zhu
Secretary, Founding Board of Trustees
Dr. Zhu is the co-director of the Graduate Program in Interpreting and Translation Studies at Wake Forest University. He is a firm believer in the transformative power of education and the importance of intercultural communication. Dr. Zhu has been working as a passionate educator in the language, culture and business fields in both the U.S. and China. He is also an ATA-certified translator in English-Chinese languages and an expert member of the Translator Association of China. Dr. Zhu received a MBA and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Renmin University, China. He also received a M.A Intercultural Services in Healthcare from Wake Forest University, North Carolina.
Mr. Sean Gautam
Treasurer, Founding Board of Trustees
Mr. Gautam is the Founder of PortfolioPro, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm in North Carolina. Mr. Gautam has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. He previously worked at a national financial consulting firm in Washington, D.C. for 10 years, where he was the CFO. Mr. Gautam is the current Board Chair of Davidson College’s WDAV Classical Public Radio and also serves on the Board of Opera Carolina. He is also the chair of Rotary District 7680 Grants Committee and is a Past President of Charlotte North Rotary Club. Mr. Gautam has been involved with the Business Advisory Committee, Charlotte International Cabinet, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and other organizations. Mr. Gautam is a graduate of Georgetown University Law School and holds an MBA, Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce degrees.
Ms. Ynez Olshausen
Advisory Board Member
Ms. Olshausen is a globally competent educational leader with proven ability to consistently assure high levels of learning for all students in diverse, multilingual and international school settings. She has spent over 40 years in public education, including 22 years as the leader of successful language immersion schools in the US Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Germany and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Ms. Olshausen is the founding principal of E.E. Wadell Language Academy in Charlotte and received the 2004 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools – Principal of the Year Recognition as outstanding educational leader from among 160 K-12 schools. She has also received several other distinguished recognitions for her achievements, including the 2015 Governor of North Carolina – Order of the Long Leaf Pine Recognition for her distinguished service to the public schools of North Carolina in language immersion and global education. In 2014, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction appointed Ms. Olshausen to the NC Dual Language Immersion Statewide Advisory Group. Ms. Olshausen received her B.A. from UC Berkley and M. Ed from Boston University.
Dr. Xian Wu
Founder, East Academies Foundation
Dr. Wu is currently a Mathematics Professor at University of South Carolina (USC) and an advisor of the Confucius Institute at USC. Dr. Wu founded East Point Academy (EPA), the first Chinese immersion charter school in South Carolina, with a group of charter school advocates in 2009. He has served as the Founding Chair of the Planning Committee and Governing Board of EPA until recently. Dr. Wu is a passionate educator dedicating his time to the dual language immersion education. He is the founder of the East Academies Foundation (EAF), an organization with the core mission to promote bilingual English-Chinese immersion education. Dr. Wu received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University.
